As legal heir to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), SUVCW works hard to preserve Civil War and GAR memorials. The installation of Civil War monuments began to increase dramatically in the 1890s, as the veterans grew older and worked to ensure their contributions would be remembered. However, as the veterans of the Civil War died and their immediate relatives also passed on, these important memorials risked deterioration.<\/p>\n

On this page Camp Foster members document and catalog Civil War monuments and memorials in Southwestern Indiana. Our interest is to repair, improve, and maintain these historic markers. Please visit these memorials and let us know if you have any ideas to help us with our work.<\/p>\n

Many GAR monuments and memorials erected by the GAR fall under the protection of the SUVCW as memorialized by a Deed of Conveyance from the GAR dated 13 February 1954. No individual, local government entity, cemetery, or other veterans\u2019 organization may claim ownership of GAR memorials unless the memorial was specifically deeded to an organization other than the SUVCW.<\/p>\n
